This exhibition is a triple premiere: for the first time we are showing works by Hannes Mussner, for the first time a pure sculpture exhibition, for the first time sculptures made of wood.

The Latin term materia means material, theme, cause, substance. The exhibition title thus refers to the material of the exhibited works and to their theme, whereby in Hannes Mussner’s wooden sculptures the two are mutually dependent: Hannes Mussner, a master student of Stephan Balkenhol, considers wood as a once living material with growth, fibers and wounds as well as its close connection to human life not only as a medium, but as a means of expression for the common humanity that connects us all.

At the center of his works is a deep engagement with human figures, carefully crafted to create a dialog with the viewer. His sculptures evoke existential questions and blur the boundaries between individual experiences and archetypal representations.

The sculptures in the exhibition are made from various types of wood - linden, poplar, oak, etc. - and some are painted with acrylic paint. The structure of their surfaces varies. For example, the upper body of “Mein Bruder hat eine Rolex” is as smooth as a young man's body, while the coats of “Sister Sweet” and “Sister Tall” are differently rough and form a contrast to their smooth legs and leggings.

The works of Hannes Mussner, who currently lives in both Italy and Germany, reflect the meeting of different cultural influences and perspectives. The artistic expression extends beyond the visual and invites the viewer on a contemplative journey. With his wooden sculptures, Hannes Mussner aims not only to offer a fresh perspective on existence and perception, but also to express a deep appreciation for the importance of wood as a medium that spans the gap between artistic expression and the essence of humanity itself.
