Body Language features wall works made of glazed tiles and sculptures made of glazed ceramics. In the works presented in the exhibition, Janis Löhrer deals with queer identity, masculinity, and the relationship between body and space.

Viewed from a distance, the tile works in soft white and blue tones are reminiscent of familiar old wall tiles. Only when viewed up close do they reveal a multitude of male figures in intimate love scenes, whose depiction invite reflection on social norms. The compositions present diverse bodies in the act of desire, defenseless and playful in the pictorial space of the glazed tiles. Again and again, the fine drawing of the figures is crossed by painted marks and stains, creating an atmosphere of public space.

While the wall works offer insights into utopian spaces and naked bodies, the ceramic sculptures depict classic men's underwear, turning the space itself into a playground for exploring the male body. The sculptures highlight their intended pragmatic function in fine detail and raise questions about the nature of masculinity and the object-like potential of intimate underwear.

Janis Löhrer was born in Aachen in 1991. He studied fine arts at the Düsseldorf Art Academy and graduated in 2019. In 2024, Janis Löhrer received the Promotional Prize for Fine Arts of the state capital of Düsseldorf. He lives and works in Berlin.
