What interests Carlo Krone most in painting is the opportunity to continually question his own way of working. "Freischwimmer" (in German: 'free swimmer' - to break free from something) describes this attitude as an attempt to remain flexible – open to new painterly questions, unexpected decisions and changes of direction. The body of work presented here thus becomes an opportunity to repeatedly test the limits of his own artistic approach.

The paintings often begin with a self-imposed painterly challenge. A linear structure, a particular color or an unusual pictorial space may already serve as the starting point for a new work. Carlo Krone deliberately avoids detailed planning and preparatory sketches. Motifs, compositions and connections emerge only in the course of painting. Each decision transforms the next –  like a continuous improvisation.

This openness also extends to the individual painterly decisions. Carlo Krone often follows what he calls the "path of least resistance". By this he does not mean simplification, but rather the willingness to give an idea only as much technical precision as a particular work requires. Perspectives may tilt, proportions may shift, and painterly solutions may deliberately remain simple. What matters is the freedom to find the right form for each painting in a playful way.

Precise and rough passages, references to art history and everyday imagery, as well as vibrant colors and muted earth tones naturally coexist on the same canvas. It is precisely where very different modes of representation meet that painting becomes most interesting for Carlo Krone. He deliberately brings them together and continually plays them off against one another. The paintings derive their impact from this interplay of decisions, detours and contradictions that emerge during the painting process and often remain visible in the finished work.

A mermaid, a drying rack or the casual gesture of licking the lid of a yoghurt pot all appear equally worthy of being depicted. Familiar situations shift without losing their accessibility. In this way, Carlo Krone creates works that encourage us to see the familiar with fresh eyes, revealing how much painterly potential lies within everyday observations.
